Today's cigar aficionados Article
Central Cigars, St. Petersburg, FL

"Central Cigars" cigar bar in downtown St. Petersburg, Florida offers a fun, relaxing atmosphere where you can share the camaraderie of fellow smokers, play billiards and enjoy top-shelf libations. It's like the "Cheers" of cigar bars, "where everybody knows your name". I paid a visit with my friend Tagore and his charmingly cute sister, Simone, whom we all agreed is a professional heartbreaker.

St. Petersburg is one of my favorite West Coast destinations in Florida. The beaches of soft white sand, and inviting turquoise waters make for some of the best beaches in Florida. Fort DeSoto Park ranks in the top ten beaches in the United States. Also in St. Pete, the world's largest collection of the artist Salvador Dali's works can be seen at the Salvador Dali Museum, and the Florida International Museum houses a permanent Kennedy Gallery exhibit, complete with a replica of the Oval Office. (I must go there and find the stash of Cuban cigars.)

The downtown area of St. Petersburg has an array of shops, restaurants and museums. On a Saturday night, downtown St. Pete is party-central. Music spills into the air while club patrons overflow into the street from the clubs and many outdoor caf?s. It makes for great people watching and puts us in a festive mood as Tagore and I head for Central Cigars, which is located on Central Avenue, of course. Simone met up with us later to share drinks and swap stories about dealings with the opposite sex.

The retail area of Central Cigars has an extensive collection of some the finest premium cigars. As a matter of fact, I jumped at the chance to purchase two smokes that I haven't seen at several other establishments. I bought two CAO cigars; the CAO Brazilia Anaconda (read my review here) or (buy it here) and the CAO Italia, which I haven't smoked as of this writing. My choice of smoke to enjoy while hanging out at Central Cigars was the La Gloria Cubana Serie R Maduro No. 7, as I knew it would last about 2 hours.

Central Cigars has been in business for 8 years, and our host this evening, David Ludwig, has been there for seven of those years. Not only does David have a great knowledge of the cigars, sundries and libations, but with his history at the business, he has lots of great stories, like the time a fight broke out on the back patio. David also has a sarcastic, witty charm, which adds to the personality of the service, and the story-telling. The surroundings are what you would expect from a cigar bar; posh and "clubby".

There are several areas to enjoy yourself at Central Cigars. There is sidewalk seating in front, where you can enjoy the outdoors and do some people watching while you smoke. Just inside the front entrance is the retail section where you can shop 15 different brands the over 100 cigars they represent.

After the retail section you walk through swinging doors, reminiscent of the "Old West" saloons, albeit considerably shorter, into the cigar bar. This is where you can have your cigar expertly clipped and lit for you, while you order your drink accompaniment. I am amused by the signs throughout that read, "Cigar Smoking Only".

Continuing our tour, the next accommodation we encounter is the handsome, polished wooden cigar lockers for members only. For $500 per year, you can store your premium stogies right here. Beyond this, we enter another room that includes large leather chairs, large-screen TVs and billiards tables. This is the smoking den. There is also a back court yard, and a private members room is under construction as of this writing.

If you are going to be in St. Petersburg, be sure to visit Central Cigars, 273 Central Ave., St. Petersburg, FL 33701 and tell them Kevin from Cigar Review sent you.

CAO Criollo Pampa Tin

CAO blended a handpicked selection of Cuban seed tobacco grown in Nicaragua to create the full-bodied Criollo. The cigar exemplifies the quality of cigars originating in Nicaragua while it revives memories of Cuba's golden era. A vintage Criollo '98 wrapper enhances the big, earthy flavor and reveals complex notes of walnuts, sweet spice and leather. The long finish is remarkably clean with hints of cinnamon and peppermint.

Camacho Cigars Interview

Camacho Cigars, makers of premium handmade cigars, such as the highly rated Baccarat The Game & Baccarat Casino Vintage Selection, Camacho and La Fontana started out as a humble operation over 25 years ago;

Today they have grown to become a successful, vertically integrated company based in Miami, Florida. They grow their own tobacco, manufacture their own cigars and boxes, and handle their own distribution. Camacho Cigars manufactures 16 cigar names, seven of which are their own labels.

Cigar Review: Could you tell me about the history of the Eiroa Family in relation to the cigar business?

Christian Eiroa: Our story is very similar to most others that had to leave Cuba. My grandfather grew tobacco in Cuba. In doing so, he built a great relationship with the Oliva family (the tobacco people, not the cigar people). They were based in Tampa. My father left Cuba in 1959 and joined the army to participate in the Bay of Pigs invasion. He then served in Korea. Once finished, he went back to Tampa where he secured a job at Perfecto Garcia. When the Embargo was to commence, Angel Oliva offered my father to go to Honduras and try to grow tobacco. At this time, tobacco was being grown in many areas because the leaf brokers needed to find new sources of tobacco. After the first crop, my father decided to go on his own. Eventually, he had close to 2,000 acres where he grew tobacco in. Some in partnerships, some by himself. As time went on, he got into making cigars for others and in the mid - 80's he purchased the Baccarat "The Game" brand and in the mid 90's, Camacho.

Cigar Review: How important are cigars to the Eiroa Family?

Christian Eiroa: Growing tobacco and making cigars is all we have ever done! I grew up in the farms, worked in the factories since I was about 7 yrs. old over the summers. We love this business. What we love most is the creation of something so enjoyable that started with one small seed. It truly is amazing. You should come down to see us so you can witness it all yourselves. Yes, this is an invitation, you are welcome to come on any of the trips we program. All you have to do is cover your travel expenses and a couple of other incidental fees. How and when did you get involved in the family business? June 28th, 1995. Soon after I finished my master's degree and felt ready to go down to Honduras, I did. I guess I always knew that this is what I would end up doing. If there were a narrator, he would be saying: "It was Christian's destiny".

Cigar Review: Have the increased amount of hurricanes in the past year and a half hurt the your tobacco crops?

Christian Eiroa: Most of the time they do not run into our growing season. They do cause us to lose seed beds and they do delay the starting time. Nothing crucial, fortunately.

Cigar Review: Is business good for the Camacho brand right now?

Christian Eiroa: Yes, we just finished launching three great items: The Camacho Coyolar (Black), the Legend - ario and the Camacho Time campaign is under way. Camacho identifies our company so much that as of 11 / 01 / 05, we have changed our name to "Camacho Cigars". What is your perspective on the current status of the Cigar Industry? I think that the cigars being offered today in the U.S. are some of the best, ever, anywhere. Although most of the companies today are very traditional we love to see how the market is evolving. This only makes us want to keep pushing to see how much we can influence consumers' tastes. Does this make any sense? Because we were always following tradition, we were careful about not moving away from it. Today, this has become part of the fun. If you had time to interview some old - timers, guys who have been smoking for 20 + years, they might tell you just that. They might tell you how much they love the fact that the choices are available. The industry is solid and steady.

Cigar Review: Do you think the TV advertisements from truth.com have hurt or actually helped the tobacco industry?

Christian Eiroa: This is a good question. California once issued a report during the 90's to try to dissuade people from smoking cigars. However, the results only helped us. The results were:

The higher your education level and the higher your income, the more you smoked cigars and less you smoked cigarettes. The lower your education and the lower your income, the more you smoked cigarettes. I guess what I am trying to say is that a person who decides to make cigar smoking his hobby, does so knowing that this is not the healthiest of hobbies. They also know that their risks for addiction are much less. With this in mind, I think the answer would have to be "they have neither hurt nor helped". Those campaigns cater cigarette smokers more than they do cigar smokers.

Cigar Review: The recent talk is that we are heading into a new cigar boom, do you think we are headed that way?

Christian Eiroa: There has been talk about this for some time. The numbers do not agree with it, though. Consumption in our industry has remained steady with low single digit increased for the past 3 years. Those who feel the increases may be retailers who have had competitors close shop and us smaller cigar companies who have grown at the expense of some now defunct manufacturers and / or bigger companies.

Cigar Review: Do some lines sell more than others for Camacho Cigars? If so Which?

Christian Eiroa: Yes, our bread and butter: Baccarat "The Game".

Cigar Review: Can you tell us about what is being called "Camacho Black", your new line?

The Camacho Coyolar is a cigar made 100 % with the tobacco from the farm with the same name. It's a smaller property but has been my father's favorite farm for 40 years. We only used it to grow filler but this Coyolar seed actually yielded some beautiful wrapper. The cigars are much stronger than we anticipated so we have been letting them sit for longer periods of time. We are very happy with this cigar, especially since we have been able to make it with the tobacco from that farm.

Cigar Review: Are there going to be any new Cigars added to your lineup? If so could you tell us about the future plans of Camacho Cigars?

Christian Eiroa: Yes, the Legend-ario which has just been launched and next year there may be a surprise or two which I do not wish to talk about just yet.

Cigar Review: Do you have a favorite smoke from the Camacho Cigar lineup?

Christian Eiroa: The Camacho SLR Rothschild mad., the Legend-ario and the Diploma. Those are my three favorites.

The 2007 Import and Export Market for Smoking Pipes, Pipe Bowls, Cigar or Cigarette Holders, and Parts Thereof in Denmark

The 2007 Import and Export Market for Smoking Pipes, Pipe Bowls, Cigar or Cigarette Holders, and Parts Thereof in Denmark
On the demand side, exporters and strategic planners focusing on smoking pipes, pipe bowls, cigar or cigarette holders, and parts thereof in Denmark face a number of questions. Which countries are supplying smoking pipes, pipe bowls, cigar or cigarette holders, and parts thereof to Denmark? How important is Denmark compared to others in terms of the entire global and regional market? How much do the imports of smoking pipes, pipe bowls, cigar or cigarette holders, and parts thereof vary from one country of origin to another in Denmark? On the supply side, Denmark also exports smoking pipes, pipe bowls, cigar or cigarette holders, and parts thereof. Which countries receive the most exports from Denmark? How are these exports concentrated across buyers? What is the value of these exports and which countries are the largest buyers? This report was created for strategic planners, international marketing executives and import/export managers who are concerned with the market for smoking pipes, pipe bowls, cigar or cigarette holders, and parts thereof in Denmark. With the globalization of this market, managers can no longer be contented with a local view. Nor can managers be contented with out-of-date statistics which appear several years after the fact. I have developed a methodology, based on macroeconomic and trade models, to estimate the market for smoking pipes, pipe bowls, cigar or cigarette holders, and parts thereof for those countries serving Denmark via exports, or supplying from Denmark via imports. It does so for the current year based on a variety of key historical indicators and econometric models. In what follows, Chapter 2 begins by summarizing where Denmark fits into the world market for imported and exported smoking pipes, pipe bowls, cigar or cigarette holders, and parts thereof. The total level of imports and exports on a worldwide basis, and those for Denmark in particular, is estimated using a model which aggregates across over 150 key country markets and projects these to the current year. From there, each country represents a percent of the world market. This market is served from a number of competitive countries of origin. Based on both demand- and supply-side dynamics, market shares by country of origin are then calculated across each country market destination. These shares lead to a volume of import and export values for each country and are aggregated to regional and world totals. In doing so, we are able to obtain maximum likelihood estimates of both the value of each market and the share that Denmark is likely to receive this year. From these figures, rankings are calculated to allow managers to prioritize Denmark compared to other major country markets. In this way, all the figures provided in this report are forecasts that can be combined with internal information sources for strategic planning purposes.

Metropolitan Cigars - Ybor City

Metropolitan Cigars on 7th Avenue, in the historic Ybor City section of Tampa, Florida features one of the world's largest walk-in humidors with a history dating back to the turn of the 20th century. Two wonderful discoveries in cigars were made on the recommendation of owner Sam Capitano.

Metropolitan Cigars has quite an interesting history that follows the development of Ybor City into the cigar capitol of the world in the early 1900's. The atmosphere of Ybor City demands attention. Brick lined streets overlooked by black wrought iron balconies, shops featuring hand made treasures, and cuisine of Cuban and Italian decent topped off with Cuban coffee and caf? con leche are everywhere.

At the turning of the 20th Century, Ybor City's population was made up of mostly Spanish, Cuban, and Italian immigrants. Tampa was no more than a mosquito-ridden fishing village of some 700 people when Vicente Martinez Ybor, a cigar manufacturer and Cuban exile, came to Tampa to establish his factory.

Before long, the population of immigrants swelled to 30,000 and contributed to making Tampa the cigar capital of the world. Francisco Capitano and Company were famous manufacturers of "high grade Havana cigars" in the early years. Events leading to the Spanish-American War in 1898 led to increased world attention on this growing metropolis.

The cigar workers of Ybor City responded to Jose Marti's plea for men, money, and arms for the insurgents who opposed Spain's rule over Cuba. In 1898, thousands of U.S. troops arrived in the Tampa staging area as Teddy Roosevelt's Rough Riders prepared for military operations in the Spanish-American war. At the culmination of the war, the population of Tampa once again thrived.

After numerous successful years in the tobacco business, James Capitano, son of Francisco, decided to take the family in a different direction. In 1933 he opened the Metropolitan Pharmacy--named in honor of the $900 loan taken out of his Metropolitan Life insurance policy. The present Metropolitan Cigar Shop grew directly from the Metropolitan Pharmacy. The shop prospered during the era of World War II when the shipyards at the Port of Tampa operated 24 hours a day.

James Capitano's success was based in part by the expansion of the pharmacy's stock to include lunch boxes for the shipyard workers, whisky and alarm clocks - along with an extensive selection of fine local cigars.

Sam "Sonny" Capitano, Owner - Metropolitan Cigars

After thriving for half a century, the cigar industry abruptly fell victim to the automated machine-made cigar. Many of the big Ybor City cigar factories closed and only a few small operators kept the art of hand rolling cigars alive. A centuries old craft was nearly lost. However, the Metropolitan Pharmacy remained.

This isn't the end of Metropolitan's story. Fast forward to the 21st century and discover a newly vibrant Ybor City - a renaissance based on its designation as a Historical District. The festive atmosphere of restaurants and clubs attract diners and dancers every evening. Cigars have made their way from the back room in this century too. Sonny Capitano closed the doors of the Metropolitan Pharmacy in 1992 to open a successful cigar shop inside the historic Columbia Restaurant. Five years later, Sonny found himself establishing another shop - the Metropolitan Cigar Shop of today on Seventh Avenue.

I asked Sam for a couple of cigar recommendations. My first request was for an inexpensive bundled smoke of medium body. He directed me to a bundle of 20 - "Cuban Leaf, Rare Connecticut Habano Torpedos" for $24. That's $1.20 per stick! I have to admit, I was skeptical at that low a price that they would be any good, but I bought them anyway. What a pleasant surprise! They were a steal. He then directed me to his own brand of "Don Capitano Maduro Torpedos" for $7.00. They were excellent!

If you are going to be in Tampa, be sure to visit Metropolitan Cigars, 2014 East 7th Avenue, Tampa, FL 33605. 813-248-3304 or 800-607-3304, and tell them Kevin from Cigar review sent you. Visit their web site at http://www.metropolitancigars.com.

The 2007-2012 Outlook for Cigars in the United States

The 2007-2012 Outlook for Cigars in the United States
This study covers the latent demand outlook for cigars across the states and cities of the United States. Latent demand (in millions of U.S. dollars), or potential industry earnings (P.I.E.) estimates are given across some 12,900 cities in the United States. For each city in question, the percent share the city is of it’s state and of the United States is reported. These comparative benchmarks allow the reader to quickly gauge a city vis-à-vis others. This statistical approach can prove very useful to distribution and/or sales force strategies. Using econometric models which project fundamental economic dynamics within each state and city, latent demand estimates are created for cigars. This report does not discuss the specific players in the market serving the latent demand, nor specific details at the product level. The study also does not consider short-term cyclicalities that might affect realized sales. The study, therefore, is strategic in nature, taking an aggregate and long-run view, irrespective of the players or products involved.

Cheap cigarettes, discount tobacco and Cigars online is it legal?

Many people online today still believe that buying tobacco products via the Internet is an experience that is doomed to failure. Either, the package will go astray, or the HM Customs and Excise storm troopers will smash down the door and abseil from the roof to collect the pennies that they are allegedly due for tax evasion.

That may on the face of it seem silly to some of you guys out there, but let us consider the propaganda issued by the UK Government before we find this amusing.

Im a smoker myself and the prices that we are expected to pay in the United Kingdom are outrageous to say the least. As far as this Government are concerned we can just do as we are told and pay up!! I dont think thats right, its time for a change.

I first started buying Cigarettes on-line some 5 years ago and its not been a smooth ride by any means. It was difficult to find a good supplier, HM Customs & Excise had something to say, and sent a bill for every sleeve I managed to get! Until, I realized that it wasnt me that was doing something wrong. It was our duly elected Government that was acting outside the law. Now Im left very much alone to get on with it and make the savings that Im entitled to make as a citizen of the European Union.

These savings do not only apply to me, its your right to make the choice and start saving money online today!

I came across a website that clearly states the law as far as buying cigarettes, cigars and tobacco via the Internet goes and it opened my eyes as to how much Id been missing out on. The website www.discountcigarettesuk.com is an online Tobacconist that delivers direct to your door in the UK. Their cheap, reliable, informative with a delivery time of between 3 and 5 days direct to your door. You cant get better than that. Ive never lost an order.

As Im writing this its beginning to appear like an advert for Discount Cigarettes UK but Its not really. As a smoker without money to throw away I feel like Im getting a quality service and knowing that many of you guys out there are in the same position as me then Its my duty as a web user to share this information with every UK resident that will want to save their hard earned cash, now and in the future.

Declan Keane is an unhappy member of the UK community. He is not an author or affiliated to any web site nor promoting Discount Cigarettes UK . He can be contacted by email: declan01@hotmail.com

Hoyo de Monterrey Excaliber # 3 Maduro

Introduced in the 1970s, Hoyo de Monterrey Excalibur quickly made its mark as a super-premium cigar with an appealing price. To name but one of its many admirers, The Robb Report has recognized Excalibur as one of the world's five greatest cigars. An extremely well constructed medium to full bodied cigar, Hoyo de Monterrey Excalibur is a superb example of Honduran craftsmanship. Lighter in color than a Cuban cigar as a result of its fine Connecticut Shade wrapper, this cedar-aged cigar is made with a rich Honduran blend that is very much in the Cuban tradition. Like the legendary sword that inspired its name, Excalibur is a superbly balanced work of art.

Doing so, however, is not an obvious task. First, one needs to find firms competing in the same sector. Second, one needs to control for exchange rate volatility. Finally, one needs use comparable financial standards. This report overcomes these issues and gives full financial benchmarks vis--vis worldwide competitors who are present in the same narrow industrial classification. Benchmarks cover assets, liabilities, income and ratios. Since our reports are printed on demand, the figures available are for the latest quarter and are the most up to date available (4 reports are produced each year).

How To Find And Buy Quality Cuban Cigars

It is a widely known fact among cigar lovers that the very best quality cigars are those from Cuba. The problem with having that knowledge is that it can land you in hot water if you are determined to buy them or at the very least make you get burned by someone selling cigars as Cubans that really aren't. If you are insistent on getting yourself a box of these high quality stogies then you should follow some of the advice given below to make sure you get what you are seeking and stay out of trouble at the same time.

Since President Kennedy placed an embargo on Cuba in 1963, Cuban cigars have been illegal to import. One little known fact is that JFK had one of his assistants go to Cuba and bring back a large supply of the Cubans before the embargo took effect so that he would have them for his own personal use. Partly because they are the best and partly because they are forbidden, the Cubans are highly desired by cigar aficionados. The only way that one can legally bring back cigars from Cuba is if you go there on an officially licensed trip, but even then you are only allowed one hundred dollars worth. You need to know that buying, selling, and trading Cuban cigars in the United States is against the law and you can be fined over $50,000 for doing so.

If you are considering buying a complete box of Cubans you can expect to pay heavily for them, they aren?t cheap at all and a box can set you back as much as $500. If you are shopping for these classic stogies and you are offered a box for less than a couple hundred dollars they are probably not authentic. This is largely the case with many internet sites so be careful when buying them on the internet.

So, with all that said, how in the world are you supposed to be able to find the real thing? One of the simplest ways to get them is to go to the Great White North, Canada. They aren't illegal there so you can buy them there, but you must camouflage them to bring them back here because it is still illegal to bring them into the U.S. Remove them from their original packaging, remove the rings, and put them in another box. With all the other things customs agents are looking for these days they generally don't check cigars that closely and it isn't really considered a huge offense to bring them in anyway.

Hoyo de Monterrey Excalibur 1066 Dark Knight II

A full-bodied Honduran cigar with a rich Cameroon wrapper and a flavorful Connecticut Broadleaf binder, Excalibur 1066 is named after the legendary sword of King Arthur and the historic Battle of Hastings. Excalibur 1066 is the first cigar that has ever combined the rich Honduran taste with the richness of a Cameroon wrapper. The blend is a combination of Honduran, Nicaraguan and Dominican tobaccos. The character of the cigar is further enhanced by a select Broadleaf binder grown in the Connecticut River Valley. Excalibur 1066 gives the discriminating smoker the very best of two worlds, rich flavor and Connecticut smoothness.

Ashton Aged Maduro Pyramid

Handcrafted by Arturo Fuente, the Ashton Aged Maduro is a smooth, dark cigar with an amazingly pleasant aroma. The Ashton Aged Maduro uses the best Connecticut broadleaf wrappers and the finest Dominican tobaccos. This is a sweet, smooth maduro fit for a king. Ashton Aged Maduro is rare because of its selected and extremely limited Connecticut broad leaf wrapper. The initial sweet taste comes from the wrapper, but once lit, the cigar becomes rich and nutty much like a great Madeira or Tawny Port, whose distinct flavor comes from aging in Sherry finished French oak barrels. The wrapper and aged filler creates a rich and complex flavor elevating the Ashton Aged Maduro to a class all its own.

La Gloria Cubana Churchill Maduro 5 Pack

Today, produced in both Miami and the Dominican Republic, La Gloria Cubana is one of the most sought after cigars in the world.

The 2007 Import and Export Market for Cigars, Cheroots, and Cigarillos Made with Tobacco in Denmark

The 2007 Import and Export Market for Cigars, Cheroots, and Cigarillos Made with Tobacco in Denmark
On the demand side, exporters and strategic planners focusing on cigars, cheroots, and cigarillos made with tobacco in Denmark face a number of questions. Which countries are supplying cigars, cheroots, and cigarillos made with tobacco to Denmark? How important is Denmark compared to others in terms of the entire global and regional market? How much do the imports of cigars, cheroots, and cigarillos made with tobacco vary from one country of origin to another in Denmark? On the supply side, Denmark also exports cigars, cheroots, and cigarillos made with tobacco. Which countries receive the most exports from Denmark? How are these exports concentrated across buyers? What is the value of these exports and which countries are the largest buyers? This report was created for strategic planners, international marketing executives and import/export managers who are concerned with the market for cigars, cheroots, and cigarillos made with tobacco in Denmark. With the globalization of this market, managers can no longer be contented with a local view. Nor can managers be contented with out-of-date statistics which appear several years after the fact. I have developed a methodology, based on macroeconomic and trade models, to estimate the market for cigars, cheroots, and cigarillos made with tobacco for those countries serving Denmark via exports, or supplying from Denmark via imports. It does so for the current year based on a variety of key historical indicators and econometric models. In what follows, Chapter 2 begins by summarizing where Denmark fits into the world market for imported and exported cigars, cheroots, and cigarillos made with tobacco.

The History of Ashton Cigars

Owned by a Philadelphia based enterprise and named after a well known and respected English pipe-maker these fine tailored cigars are made in the Dominican Republic.

These cigars come in three different styles of flavor. The first is simply known as Ashton. Then there is the Ashton Cabinet Selection and the Ashton Aged Maduro. All three are wrapped in Conneticut Leaf, although the Ashton Aged Maduro is wrapped in broadleaf instead of shade, and is also filled with a Domincan blend. You really must try them all to find your own personal preference.

The Cabinet Selection is the mildest of the three, due to the extra aging of the tobacco. If you prefer a slightly richer smoke go with the standard selection. If you like a sweeter cigar go with a Maduro No. 10. I personally recommend the standard selection but the selection of cigars is truly a personal decision.

Ashton also offers the Ashton Crown series which is made with only the most precious leaves from the Chatea de la Fuente farm. These special cigars are always a great choice.

Ashton is definitely my favorite brand of cigars. The quality and consitency of associated with this brand is unsurpassed. My favorite is the Ashton VSG, or virgin sun grown cigar.
